Simon Rattle conducts Schumann 2 CD (Hybrid-SACD)

Available versions

For Simon Rattle, Robert Schumann is "the echt Romantic". And in fact, the exuberance of the period, its passion and its melancholy can be heard with unique intensity in Schumann's music to this day. For the Berliner Philharmoniker, Schumann's symphonies have always been part of their core repertoire. The 1953 Wilhelm Furtwängler recording in particular has attained cult status. And so it only stands to reason that the Berliner Philharmoniker launched their Berliner Philharmoniker Recordings label with a cycle of the four Schumann symphonies.

The first lavishly produced linen-covered edition presented the cycle in a top quality range of visual and audio formats. The recordings are now being released on CD for € 24.90 (approx. US $ 26.80 or £ 17.64). The hardcover digipack includes two hybrid SACDs which can be played on any CD or SACD player.

The Financial Times wrote about the original release: “It’s impossible to listen to these performances without admiring the fabulous sonority of the Berlin strings. Rattle finds geniality in the music. This is Schumann informed by German tradition, played with warmth, refinement and unaffected style – a fresh, modern counterpart to Sawallisch’s set, long the benchmark version.” The new edition enables playback with either the best CD sound or – when used as an SACD – in high-resolution audio quality and in surround sound.

Of course, the Schumann cycle is still available in the premium linen-covered Edition as well as on vinyl.
