With this credo, the chief conductor of what at that time was called the Berliner Philharmonisches Orchester played an important role in allowing the musicians to conceive of themselves as soloists — something that remains one of the unmistakable qualities of the Berliner Philharmoniker to this day.

Principal Clarinet Wenzel Fuchs is showcased here with what is perhaps the most famous concerto ever written for his instrument: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A major. The Innsbruck native has been a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker since 1993. Fuchs performs the work under the baton of Alan Gilbert, with whom he shares not only an artistic friendship but also a passion for skiing.
