Lorin Maazel “The Early Recordings” 18-CD Limited Edition

Available versions

Energetic, fiery, taut: These attributes are associated with Lorin Maazel’s conducting style. The fact that as an excellent violinist he was also able to elicit a magnificent string sound from his orchestras is almost overlooked. He had very close ties with the Berliner Philharmoniker, especially in the early days of his career when Maazel took the international classical music scene by storm. All Deutsche Grammophon recordings from this period are now available in an extensive CD box, which we are offering for the price of EUR 79.00 – including a 7-Day Ticket for the Digital Concert Hall.

In 1957, the just 27-year-old Maazel and the Berliner Philharmoniker gave their first sensational performance together: Excerpts from Hector Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette. This was followed shortly afterwards with works by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, and subsequently by Beethoven and Brahms. Thus the repertoire with which Maazel established himself with the Berliner Philhrmoniker was already outlined – the virtuoso, colourful music of Russia and France on the one hand, and on the other, the works of German Classicism and Romanticism, where his concern was less with symmetry than the heaven-storming spirit of these epochs. This edition also includes performances with other orchestras Maazel appeared with in his time, but the vast majority document his work with the Berliner Philharmoniker, who followed the ideas of the newcomer with an evident open-mindedness and curiosity.
