Lang Lang plays piano concertos by Prokofiev and Bartók Simon Rattle conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker

Available versions

For their first joint CD recording, pianist Lang Lang, conductor Sir Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker have put together a special repertoire: Béla Bartók’s Second Piano Concerto, coupled with Sergei Prokofiev’s Third Concerto. In these works, the qualities of the artists are shown to their best advantage: Lang Lang’s almost magical keyboard skills and the temperament and flexibility of the orchestra and conductor. The recording is now available in a Deluxe Edition in our online shop – including a short documentary and excerpts from the rehearsals on DVD.

As an exclusive offer for our customers, this product includes a 48-Hour Ticket for the Digital Concert Hall.

Talking about Lang Lang’s interpretation of Bartók, Sir Simon says he can think of no other pianist who “is able to be more sheerly, uncannily accurate in this piece and then still have the technical ability in reserve to make it dance, make it phrase.” When it comes to the Prokofiev, he notes: “It goes without saying that it’s extraordinarily difficult and virtuosic to play, and it’s an amazingly splashy display piece, but with many moments of delicacy and beauty.” This concisely outlines the main characteristics of these concertos which, in addition to thundering keyboard playing, always convey sophistication and authentic feeling. No less attractive in this compilation is the contrast between the two works as they both display all the personal idiom of their respective creators. While Prokofiev’s concerto is infused with all the dynamics of noble elegance, the Bartók – which is often referred to as the most difficult in the piano concerto repertoire –, is a work of rough folklore and unfiltered expressiveness.
