“Karajan Symphony Edition” with the Berliner Philharmoniker 38-CD Limited Edition

Available versions

Karajan strove tirelessly not only for interpretive perfection: with the great composers of the Classical and Romantic periods, he also wanted completeness. As a result, his discography embodies no less than a representative cross-section of the music of the 18th and 19th centuries. This 38 CD edition contains eight symphonic cycles, including those by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms and Bruckner. We are offering this limited edition – including a 7-day voucher for the Digital Concert Hall – for € 49.90.

No less than 64 symphonies are brought together here, plus overtures and other orchestral works. It goes without saying that the edition includes legendary recordings such as Karajan’s Beethoven cycle from the 1970s. In addition, there are interpretations that are otherwise less the focus of attention, such as when Karajan turns to the music of his fellow Austrians Mozart and Haydn, or the specific airiness of Mendelssohn, mixed with the magnificent sound of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Furthermore, German Romanticism is represented by timeless Brahms and Schumann recordings. Plus, there is a reference to the Russian repertoire with an impassioned recording of the six Tchaikovsky symphonies. However, the greater part of the box set is taken up with the nine symphonies of Anton Bruckner. With his profound understanding of both the music’s monumental arches of sound as well as its emotional and spiritual depths, Karajan is regarded by many to this day as his ideal interpreter.
